After years of controversy, bad publicity, legal problems — even tragedy — Herbalife (HLF) seems to have put its worst days behind it.

The direct seller of everything from nutritional supplements to skin lotions has posted three straight years of double-digit earnings gains and two straight years of double-digit sales gains.

The recent growth comes after a tough stretch that included the untimely death of company founder Mark Hughes.

Hughes died in 2000 after an overdose of antidepressant medication and alcohol. He was 44. It was a particularly tough blow to a company whose products are designed to make folks healthy.

Another blow came from claims that Herbalife’s products contained the stimulant ephedra, which has been linked to side effects such as heart attack, stroke and sudden death.

The company’s business model came under scrutiny as well.
