  All an identity thief needs to commit a crime or ruin someone’s credit is a Social Security number, says Darlene Eckard, an independent associate for Pre-Paid Legal Service Inc. in Conover.
So, knowing more than 600 Catawba County Schools students’ Social Security numbers are listed on the Internet is a cause for concern, Eckard said.
“This a huge deal,� said Eckard, whose job is to help victims of identity theft. “There are a number of ways people actually use your identity to commit crimes.�
