The stack of fliers strategically displayed on the counters of downtown Stockton lunch spots offer access to a lawyer at a low cost, and it’s just a phone call away, they say.

“You’ll be really glad you have one!” reads the red handout, promising prepaid legal service at a cutthroat cost starting at just $26.95 a month.

Dial the number printed in bold at the bottom and Stanley McVay answers. The Stockton entrepreneur is eager to set up a meeting, where he spreads out an assortment of pamphlets on the table in front of you. Each one addresses your legal needs, he said.

“Read this article in depth,” said McVay, 50, pointing to a write-up explaining the pitfalls of failing to protect yourself from identity theft. “It’s really going to rock your world”

McVay’s sales approach may be novel, but prepaid legal services such as the plans he sells have been around for decades. A local law professor advised people to save their money, yet the low-cost legal advice is catching on, an industry insider said.
