Pink Truth: From Army Captain to Mary Kay Rep

Emily Howard, Madison Record:

mary-kay-captain.jpgSoldiering is a job like no other. Members of America’s armed forces push themselves to the limit each day, whether training stateside or living and fighting in a war zone. It is a way of life that takes getting used to, for both soldiers and their families.

So what happens when it is time to go back to “normal?” Is there a “normal” any more after soldiering for nearly 20 years?

Amy Morelli, a Mary Kay beauty consultant in Madison-formerly Capt. Amy O’Hare, commander of Company C at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio-is living this transition.

Morelli was in the middle of a great Army career. She had been a soldier since joining the Army in 1988 fresh out of high school. She worked her way up to the rank of Captain in the Medical Service Corps, traveled the world, and had been deployed to Panama, Kosovo and Iraq. Her peers, superiors and the soldiers she commanded respected her.

So why the decision to leave the service…to sell Mary Kay?

Amy had decided it was time to replace her Army family with a family of her own. After struggling with the decision for two years, she left the Army for good last August.

“I’m 36 and not getting any younger,” she said. “My plan is to finally have a family of my own.”
