increaseSales from direct marketing have boomed, increasing 25 per cent over the past two years to a new high of nearly $2 billion. Most of the sales are done on a one-to-one basis, accounting for nearly 70 per cent of all direct sales. About 29 per cent are done using the party plan or group-selling approach made popular by such direct selling juggernauts as Tupperware and Mary Kay. This is also reflected in compensation structures where multi-level marketing leads with 82 per cent of all direct sellers.

Sixty-two per cent of sales took place in the client’s home. Only 16 per cent were completed as telemarketing calls, and those were done after the seller had already opened up a relationship with the client on a face-to-face basis.
