Andrea Messinger is an independent beauty consultant for Mary Kay.

“Pink Doing Green is Mary Kay’s sustainability initiative that seeks opportunities to improve our environmental performance and helps independent consultants like me strive to find even more ways to be sustainable in our individual businesses – knowing that our actions today will impact the quality of life for future generations,” Messinger says.

One of Mary Kay’s largest efforts is its compact recycling program. Mary Kay encourages anyone with a compact that they’re finished using to contact a Mary Kay consultant to have it recycled properly

Through its Pink Doing Green Compact Recycling program, Mary Kay Inc. exceeded its 2008-2009 collection goal of 200,000 old compacts, succeeding in its pledge to add 200,000 trees to Bitterroot National Forest, the largest expanse of wilderness in the United States, which the U.S. Forest Service identified as in need of replanting. The 200,000 trees donated by Mary Kay fulfill the entire planting need in Bitterroot National Forest for 2009. Mary Kay is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation for the reforestation project.

Very commendable efforts by Mary Kay. I think it is a trend we will be seeing a lot: going green that is. I think companies do it to make them look good and get publicity more so than to actually contribute to society (perhaps I am just pessimistic this evening – who knows). Anyway, KUDOS to you Mary Kay for planting 200,000 to Bitterroot National Forest.
