Saha’s OCC Creates New Direct Sales Opportunity

July 3, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

Bangkok Post:

OCC Plc, a Saha Group marketing arm for fashion and cosmetic products, will begin its multi-level direct-sales business by the end of this month.

The move is aimed at expanding its customer base to attract people with high purchasing power, said managing director Teerada Ambhanwong.

Saha Group has collaborated with foreign partners for many years on consumer products. But many of them cost too much for the mass market, she said.

“The launch of a direct-sales business will create an opportunity for such high-priced products and will be an alternative choice for consumers,” she said.

OCC will officially introduce its direct-sales business at the 13th annual Saha Export and Trade Exhibition at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from June 25-28.

People looking for a new income opportunity are invited to apply to OCC Direct at its booth at the trade fair.

Cabarrus County Celebrates Direct Seller ACN

July 2, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

CharlotteObserver.com:

Cabarrus County leaders praised a telecommunications direct-sales company for bringing several hundred jobs to the region at its grand opening celebration Thursday.

Concord Mayor Scott Padgett and ACN Inc. representatives said they view the company as a “silver lining” amid the tough economic conditions, though both the company and the incentives used to bring it to Charlotte have opposition.

Founded in 1993, ACN moved its headquarters from Michigan to Concord in December. It sells landline phones with video screens, wireless phones, local and long-distance phone services, Internet services, home security systems and satellite television.

People pay fees to become field representatives. They earn money based on how many items they sell and how many other people they sign up with the company.

ACN says it’s a way for people to make money on their own when many businesses are laying off employees. Critics have questioned some of ACN’s business tactics. Michigan’s attorney general investigated complaints against the company in the early 1990s. ACN President Greg Provenzano said the company’s lawyers ensure that its operations are legal.

About 25,000 field representatives are expected to visit Charlotte this weekend for training seminars. Donald Trump, a New York developer and host of television’s “The Apprentice,” is scheduled to speak to the group Sunday morning.

People Are Turning To Mary Kay To ‘Make Up’ For Lost Hours & Jobs

July 2, 2009 by Angela | 2 Comments

Pasadena Sar-News:

JoAnn Kahn loves her job.

And during her 39 years as a beauty consultant/director for Mary Kay products, she’s witnessed every kind of economic situation there is - both good and bad.

But the one constant during all of that time has been the relentless success of her venture. It seems that customers are determined to buy Mary Kay Inc. merchandise, regardless of the economic climate.

And in the current struggling economy, people who have lost their jobs or had their hours cut are looking to Mary Kay for work.

“In the last three or four weeks I’ve had a rash of calls from people calling from the phone book or from my Web site,” Kahn said. “These people have sought me out looking for work.”

Job cuts, shrinking bonuses and scaled-back hours have pushed more people than ever to become direct sales representatives, a phenomenon industry experts say they’ve seen before.

In the 1990-1991 recession, the number of direct sellers increased 8 percent to 5.1 million Americans. In the 2001 recession, the work force increased to 12.2 million.

Rhonda Shasteen, chief marketing director for Mary Kay, said the Addison, Texas-based company saw traffic on its Web site increase by 108 percent in March, when the company began airing television ads to attract new sales reps.

Irma Castellanos, who works as a cook at a Mexican restaurant, was among the callers who recently contacted Kahn in hopes of selling Mary Kay products.

“Business has been slow so they started cutting my hours,” the 45-year-old Whittier resident said. “I went from 40 hours a week to 30. I sold Mary Kay years ago, and it was good for me while I was raising my kids.”

Mompreneur Is Flying High With Chemical-Free Direct Sales Opportunity

July 1, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

The Tri-City News:

Women are flying to space and can attain great heights in business, government, the arts and sports. But for many, there is still cleaning to do when they get home because nobody has yet invented self-scrubbing floors, sinks and shower doors.

A Coquitlam woman thinks she’s as close as she’ll ever be to the answer to this problem and she’s sharing the news with everyone she meets.

Tracey Whitmore is a Norwex consultant who recently discovered the company’s fine microfibre cloths that clean without chemicals. At a family-oriented trade show at Coquitlam’s Executive Inn last spring, Whitmore listened to a consultant’s pitch about Norwex microfibre cloths. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

She bought one on spec but was almost afraid to use it for fear of being disappointed. Gingerly she rubbed the scrap of fabric around the taps and the bottom of her bathroom sink and was awestruck.

All that gooey stuff — the soap scum and the stains — disappeared with nothing more than a gentle swipe. No more harsh chemicals, no more headaches from cleaning products, Whitmore said she was amazed.

It was cleaning Nirvana. “I was floored,” she recalled.

A year later and Whitmore is well on her way to making Norwex a household name in the Tri-Cities.

Teenpreneurs Are Creating Their Own Jobs

July 1, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

NYTimes.com:

Periods of high unemployment tend to be particularly hard on teenagers, who wind up competing for jobs with more experienced, laid-off adults.

When Faith Borden, 16, of Metuchen, N.J., applied for a job in March to be a counselor at a summer day camp, she looked around and saw “all these 30- and 40-year-olds,” she said. “Usually it’s just teenagers.”

She also applied at pizza restaurants, drugstores and most of the stores at her local mall, and even attended a job fair in Edison, N.J., but didn’t receive one offer. So she decided to work for herself, selling Avon products.

Unemployment for 16- to 19-year-olds is at its highest rate since 1992 — at 22.7 percent in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is causing some teenagers to rethink their notion of work and to embrace entrepreneurship.

“This is a generation raised to believe they can do anything, and the first to grow up with entrepreneurial celebrities like Steve Jobs of Apple and Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google,” said Donna Fenn, who interviewed 150 young entrepreneurs for her forthcoming book, “Upstarts: How Gen Y Entrepreneurs Are Rocking the World of Business and 8 Ways You Can Profit From Their Success.”

Avon & Mary Kay See An Employment Boom

June 30, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

BloggingStocks:

In order to keep income trickling in, companies the likes of Avon, Mary Kay, and Tupperware are seeing a flux of salespeople — including professionals forced to take a second job thanks to the recession.

Becke Alexander, the sales manager for Avon, noted that she hears from laid-off bankers and stay-at-home moms every week, but the company is seeing a recent boon from “gainfully employed people worried how long they’ll stay that way.” In fact, Alexander said, “There are no hobby seekers coming in here. It’s people with a legitimate need.” This pop in makeup peddlers stems directly from the current economic crisis, but not just from unemployment. A common complaint is that bonuses have disappeared, as have hours, which have forced people to turn to direct sales to make up some cash.

This increase in direct sales representatives has happened before, with the 1990 recession leading to an 8% increase in Americans participating in such sales to 5.1 million. During the next major recession (2001), the direct sales work force increased to 12.2 million. In 2007, the estimated number of Americans involved in direct sales increased to 15 million — figures for 2008 are not available yet.

In 2007, roughly 58% of the people becoming sales reps were taking the job as a source of secondary income (these statistics are from the Direct Selling Association). According to Larry Chonko, a business ethics professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, stronger economies lead to direct sales jobs taken to get money for leisure spending. Chonko stated, “Times are tough as we know and there is an absolute need for extra income … Direct sales is not recession-proof, but it is the kind of business that even in a recession you can make success of it. And if you create a solid foundation now, then just wait until the economy comes out of the down cycle and goes into an up cycle.”

June 30, 2009 by Angela | 0 Comments

Taiwan News Online:

Herbalife, a U.S.-based personal care direct sales company, will hold its annual Asia Pacific leadership conference in Taiwan Sept. 11-13, a meeting that is expected to draw the participation of some 20,000 Herbalife members from home and abroad.

William Rahn, managing director of the company’s Asia Pacific region, made the announcement at a news conference Monday that was also attended by Bureau of Foreign Trade Deputy Director General Chiang Shih-hwang and Tourism Bureau Deputy Director General David Hsieh Wei-chun.

Expected to attend the conference at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall are an estimated 10,000 Herbalife members from Taiwan and another 10,000 top sales executives from 11 other Asia Pacific countries, including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia.

Foreign sales leaders will stay in Taiwan for at least five days and four nights. Aside from attending the 3-day conference, they will travel around Taiwan, according to Lu Jun-han, general manager of Herbalife Taiwan.

The top sales executives’ visit to Taiwan is expected to generate hundreds of millions of Taiwan dollars of business for local hotels, restaurants, and transportation providers because each of them earns annual incomes between NT$1 million and NT$10 million, Lu said.
